About the Book

I wrote this book to honor the life of my son, Derek Emerson Morey, as well as the lives of all those who live with mental illness and their loved ones. This disease does not just impact an individual, but entire families. It extends well beyond that, as it affects our communities, our country, and the entire world. I want to shine a brighter light on the stigma related to this illness and hope to create a greater awareness surrounding it. May it increase the dialogue about it, bring a deeper understanding and increased clarity for all of us. May it ignite a fire within each of us to do whatever we can to make a difference in the ongoing challenges so tightly interwoven with mental illness. My goals are to inspire readers, bring comfort to those who need it, encouragement to those who feel discouraged, and empowerment to those who feel powerless. May it provide a sense of direction and purpose to those who feel lost, alone, and uncertain about how to move forward...or question whether that is even possible. May it bring you a measure of comfort to know...it absolutely is.

About the Author

Linda Morey was born in Seattle, Washington, and has lived in the beautiful Evergreen State throughout her life. She enjoyed thirty-five years of teaching elementary school and is grateful for the lifelong bonds she continues to share with many of her former colleagues, students, and their families. While many of their life stories inspired and touched her deeply, it was her youngest son, Derek’s, challenging journey with mental illness that touched her to the core. His incredible courage was the inspiration for writing this book. Linda lives with her husband, Michael, just outside the state capital of Olympia. Her oldest son, Ryan, his wife, Amy, and their children, Griffin, Reese, and Beckett, live in Spokane, while her firstborn grandchild, Liam (Derek’s son), lives nearby. Spending time with her extended family is what she treasures most! She enjoys gardening, reading, learning foreign languages, working out, dancing, and singing along with her favorite songs from a variety of music genres. Linda is an avid longtime supporter of the NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) organization and plans to donate a portion of the proceeds from this memoir to support their ongoing work.
