It’s not always high anxiety. And on most days you can ignore it, though it keeps gnawing at the back of your mind. On other days, however, the anxiety grows and takes over your thoughts, leaving you unable to focus on your work. Stressful and debilitating questions keep running over and over in your head: “Can I really lead this team to meet our organization’s goals?” “What if I fail? What will become of my family?” “Are people happy working for me or are they all just pretending?” “Does anyone look up to me as a mentor and trust, or am I just a boss?” “Am I doing everything right?” “How can I become less stressed and more efficient?” “Will my staff problems ever end so I can work on the business, or will I forever function in fire-fighting mode?” And the list goes on and on. Until you either remember to take a deep breath and bury your head back into your work. Or until your alarm clock goes off and you’re forced to leave your bed sleepless and tired for the thousandth consecutive night in a row. Although these questions are tough, and facing the answers even tougher, the truth is that you need to find answers if you want to maintain your sanity, start seeing results, and see yourself grow as a leader. No matter the level of management or ownership you have at your company, you still have the responsibility of success first towards yourself, but also towards your team and your family.
