Three Minutes . . . Could Be a Lifetime

I wasn’t worried; I really wasn’t. I hadn’t had my period in three months. My menstrual cycle wasn’t regular to begin with, but it seemed odd. To top things off, my mother was acting weird that weekend and my dad was brooding. I tried to avoid their stares.

I was just coming out of the bathroom when my mother charged in past me and then flew out and confronted me in my bedroom. “Do you think I’m stupid?” she yelled. “Do you think I don’t know what’s going on?”

“What is your problem?” I snapped back at her.

“Do you think I haven’t noticed that you haven’t had your period? Are you pregnant?” my mother screamed.

“I know I haven’t had my period in a while. I don’t know why. But no, I’m not pregnant.”

I just knew this to be the truth.

“I’m taking you to the doctor’s this week.”

I didn’t want to burden Cody with my problems, and I didn’t place any blame on him either. It was my decision 100 percent. It was my choice, wrong or right. I didn’t expect anything else from him, but I felt like I should write him a letter and let him know. He told me he would write to me when he got back home. I hadn’t received one yet. I wasn’t angry or hurt; because I was just as guilty I never took the time to write either. I figured I should tell him I could be pregnant.

Dear Cody, Hi! How are you? I hope you are doing okay. I feel awkward telling you this, but I felt you should know. I haven’t had my period in a while. I don’t think I’m pregnant, but my mother is making me go see the doctor. I don’t hold you responsible if I’m pregnant; I just felt you should know. You don’t have to worry. I’ll be fine. I’ll let you know if I am. Well, I guess this is it for now. Take care of yourself. I hope you are well.
