Lesson One The Golf Course land of good and plenty The golf course is relatively straightforward and reasonably understood by players. The game is simple enough even with the variety of rules. Yet good golfers know how mixed up things can get out on the golf course. It is a big part of the game handling the quirks and coincidences or amazements that come with every hole. The golfers' reactions to the 'course conditions' seriously impacts scoring and it isn't as if there are ideas or much understanding to help the player handle all the feelings presented on the golf course. It is interesting that you bring your best game to deal with controversy, frustration, group dynamics, personal discovery, failure and success, while the golf course just sits there, being what it is, like it is simply watching to see what you will do. Lesson Seven Vision and Strategy I want to see all that is good and right to see Shooting par golf over 18 holes means the player gained and upheld a certain vision around the golf course. This vision for good golf sees how to mentally relax into patience, how to express well-rounded balance, how to see and avoid what doesn't belong and how to bring the course more into play as a friend and guide. The par player has vision to stay with the ball stroke to stroke by being completely into the hole. Ultimately, golf vision is a sense of relating to or matching up what the player thinks and learns to do with what the ball and the hole and the game are asking (and teaching) the player to do. Lesson Ten Game Management ... mind is the field where golf is played When swing mechanics are trained well enough to find and feel freedom from them in play the emphasis for progress becomes effective 'game management'. Good management at level par is far from the depths of the awareness and skills we find in the 'Zone', where management strategy is functioning perfectly in accordance with the play at hand. Golf in the Zone is easy and fun because the management is natural and successful, coming from the game, coming the player. Being completely tuned into the ball and the needs of the stroke, every stroke, is the ultimate management. Working and practicing this strategic focus inevitably reveals that golf management plays out as 'self management'.

About the Book

About the Author
Stephen “Golf Man” began golfing when he was nine, now fifty years enjoying the game. He golfed competitively into college in San Francisco, and enjoyed the summers working in Alaska, earning two BA degrees and entrance into Law School. Choosing to return to Alaska after college, he enjoyed thirty five years there working as a Union carpenter, General Contractor, furniture designer and builder, sculptor and writer. The long winters provided time for reading, writing and sculpturing golf. The summer times meant four months off work to teach, play and experience more about the game. With sociology and communication studies BAs, together with craftsman skills, artistic talent, comprehensive knowledge and perception of golf, Stephen’s book, Golfwise, presents a unique perspective of the game.
