Jim scheduled a meeting with his extended management team. He prepared for the meeting with the making of an honors student. He was armed with spreadsheets, financial projections, client lists and an implementation plan. He knew who would do what by when to make for a successful transition. He prided himself on his planned accomplishment and was excited to share the news. Smiling like a Cheshire cat as they entered the room, he could hardly contain himself. .. Unfortunately it did not go as well as he had envisioned. After three hours of trying to get his team excited about the expansion all they had to offer were questions, concerns and other roadblocks. He was frustrated and tired of it all. He couldn’t do this expansion without them. He could feel his anger swell up and his neck reddened. He didn’t need their approval, he would just decide and they were going to have to live with his decision Nothing was going to hold him back, that merger was happening, he was in charge, steering the way and everyone else had better damn well get on board… You can’t steer a parked car. It doesn’t matter what make or model you have, the engine size or its zero to miles per hour capacity, you can’t steer a parked car. Your organization is very much the same. It can’t move without being ignited and once started can’t keep up its endurance without the right fuel and maintenance. Jim’s experience is not unusual.
