Busted I was summoned into the office of the Salem MA Police Chief, Robert St. Pierre. Bob was a straight shooter. After he left college, he didn’t know if he wanted to become a priest or a cop. As I entered his office, my stomach dropped as I saw renowned psychic James Van Praagh’s website on the Chief’s computer screen. “Have a seat Charlie, he said, we have to talk. How can I explain that I have an officer carrying a weapon who is known for hearing voices?” There was no easy escape for me. I explained that I had this ability as a child, and that I had been working very hard to develop it. The Chief was concerned that my court cases could be in jeopardy if defense attorneys learned that evidence could be coming from the spirit world. I reminded the Chief that we were, in fact, in Salem, MA, as I pointed to my police arm patch showing a witch riding on a broomstick. He was not amused. An agreement was made that how I spent my personal time was my business, as long as the department was not involved. Word of an officer doing something like this traveled like wildfire. Many officers would come to my house for a session with the agreement that I kept it strictly confidential. Some mediums will use a stage name for this very reason; so that it will not interfere with their conventional jobs.
