About the Book

“With this writing, Lisa has shared with readers a bit of the heritage and culture of the Native American community in the Gunflint area. These values and ways of life are vanishing from our current lifestyles. Some of these beliefs are like lessons of life, and could be just as relevant today as they have been to the generations of residents who have orally passed them on to us.” —Bruce Kerfoot, a seventy-plus-year resident of Gunflint Lake, raised in the way of the woods by the Ojibwa people.

About the Author

Lisa Sellman believes that, in the words of Mahatma Gandhi, “the best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” In that sense, Lisa has truly found her calling, and the inspiration to write her first children’s book. Lisa is a professional dog trainer and animal-care professional who also volunteers in many ways in her own community. She is a volunteer for an organization in Minneapolis that coordinates outdoor trips and recreation for physically and mentally disabled children and adults all around the world, she raises funds for many animal rescues in the Twin Cities, and she is an after-school mentor for a Native American community youth group. Her hope is for parents and children to share this book as a way of learning one of life’s most important lessons of being of service to others in need. “Change can only happen in the present moment,” she says. “If you want your children to live happy and fulfilled lives, parents must slow down. Telling your children a simple bedtime story and spending that time together can lay the foundation for an incredible future for that child and your relationship with the child. Being an instrument of change in the community can completely change the outlook your child has on their world and for parents also.”
