The Elemental Crown

The night sky over Gaiana blazed with an unnatural light. Queen Lemuria stood at the highest tower of the Crystal Palace, cradling her infant daughter close to her chest. Her eyes were fixed on the horizon where flashes of red and orange cut through the darkness. The air crackled with magic and the acrid smell of burning. “They’ve breached the outer islands,” a deep voice said behind her. Lemuria didn’t turn; she knew it was Taren, her husband, and former head of the Royal Guard. “How long?” she asked, her voice steady despite the fear clawing at her heart. “Days. Perhaps hours.” Taren moved to stand beside her, his robust frame tense with anticipation of the coming battle. He gazed down at their daughter, Soraya, who slept peacefully, unaware of the danger surrounding them. Lemuria closed her eyes, feeling the pulse of the realm through the soles of her feet. The Tree of Destiny sang a mournful song, its leaves whispered warnings carried on the wind. “We always knew this day might come,” she whispered, gently kissing Soraya’s forehead. Taren’s hand rested protectively on Soraya’s back. “She cannot be here when they come,” he said, his voice thick with emotion. Lemuria nodded, a single tear escaping down her cheek. “The Earth realm,” she said. “It’s our only choice. We’ll send our most trusted to guard her.” As if summoned by her words, a shimmering portal began to form behind them. The air rippled and tore, revealing a glimpse of the Earth’s realm beyond. Through the magical window, they saw a vast expanse of golden sand meeting the endless blue of an ocean. Towering cliffs rose in the distance; their sandstone faces glowing warm in the sun of an alien world. The sky above was a deeper shade of blue than they had ever seen in Gaiana, dotted with unfamiliar cloud formations. Lemuria gasped softly at the sight. This harsh yet beautiful landscape would be her daughter’s new home – a world so different from the crystal spires and enchanted forests of Gaiana yet holding its own wild magic. “The land down under,” Taren murmured, recalling the Earth realm name for this distant shore. “Australia. A fitting guardian for our Princess.” Lemuria nodded, a single tear escaping down her cheek. “A land of ancient power, hidden beneath its modern guise. She will be safe there and learn to be strong.” Lemuria’s eyes now blazing with the full power of her bloodline. “We will hold them back,” she declared. “We will give our daughter the time she needs to grow, learn, and become who she must be.” Taren nodded, drawing his sword. The blade ignited with green energy, pulsing with the power of the Earth itself. “For Gaiana,” he said. “For Soraya.” “For hope,” Lemuria added as the first distant roar of the Zathurian invaders reached their ears. Lemuria kissed her daughter one last time with trembling hands but unwavering resolve, then turned to her most trusted advisers and lifelong friends, Sarama and Davind. “She must be protected but also know of her homeland. Teach her our ways and, our history, our magic. Tell her about the Seven Isles but nothing about her royal heritage. She must believe she is simply a child of our realm for her safety, nothing more.” They bowed. “We will, my Queen. We shall protect her and guide her in your absence until it is time to return,” Davind replied. Then, surrounded by a cocoon of protective magic, she placed the sleeping Soraya into the arms of Sarama and watched as they walked through the portal. As her child disappeared, Lemuria and Taren turned to face the oncoming storm. The fate of their world now rested in the hands of a sleeping princess and the desperate gamble of parents who dared dream of victory even in the darkest hour. But they had faced this many times before and knew instinctively they would push back the Zathura again, even if it took decades to do so. From the palace balcony, Lemuria’s gaze swept over the shimmering expanse of Gaiana. She stilled, attuning herself to the realm’s quiet heartbeat beneath the marble under her feet. In the distance, the Tree of Destiny rose like a living monument, its ancient, gnarled branches stretching impossibly high into the sky. The trunk, wider than a hundred men standing shoulder to shoulder, anchored intricate pathways of ethereal light that wound from it’s base to the crystal palace and the isles beyond, as a testament to its importance to all Gaiana.
