Sirens wailing and lights flashing, Senior Sargent Michael Adams drifted sideways as he worked hard to maintain control of his Police Cruiser. The vehicle he was pursuing had flashed up on his in car computer screen as stolen, and by the way it was attempting to evade capture he could be sure it was.
Adams watched and backed off as the stolen vehicle approached the busy crossroads, he knew the undulating road was not going to be kind to the vehicle at 90 miles per hour. The nose of the car dipped as it entered the intersection just before it launched in a ball of sparks, becoming airborne as it flew through the first two lanes of traffic, Adams braked heavily as he approached the intersection, knowing what he was watching was not going to end well. Amazingly it missed all through traffic, but as it landed in a second ball of sparks the car veered sideways. The driver trying to regain control, but to no avail, the large SUV dancing from side to side before it veered sideways and ploughed straight into a large power pole.
Adams jumped from his cruiser and briskly made his way to what was left of the wreck, no thought for his own safety, only wanting to help those who may have survived the impact. As he approached what was left of the vehicle, he noticed it had been torn in two, with the front section wrapped around the pole and the back section completely separate, the back seat exposed, he could clearly see two men on the back seat, one not moving, the other was looking himself over in amazement, seemingly uninjured.
The uninjured man noticed Adams, and jumped from the vehicle, at the same moment drawing a weapon. The pistol cracked loudly as he unloaded what was left in the clip. The four shots were directed straight for Adams who was only 30 yards from the shooter. Thankfully the shooter was obviously in shock and more focused on fleeing, so his aim was poor, despite this, one shot glanced Adams left shoulder, spinning him around on the spot. A sharp pain radiated down his arm, stopping him from pursuing the offender, thankfully Adams partner was in hot pursuit, the next two loud cracks he heard dropped the offender. The remaining three offenders in the car still hadn’t moved. In the distance he could hear the ambulance.
Marion couldn’t stop the tears from rolling down her face as she stood beside her husbands hospital bed.
“I never thought I would receive that call Michael, as much as I feared it.”
“I will be ok love, I’ts only a flesh wound” Adams replied
“You know that is because you were lucky, it could have been a lot worse, it could have been the call” Marion replied in a broken voice trying to control her emotion, a mixture of relief, fear, happiness and sadness.
“You know it’s the boys I worry about, you are more than just a father, you are their everything”
Marion and Michael had two young boys, Kane and Ethan, 11 and 7 respectively, and Marion knew how much their Father meant to them. The idea of him being gone overwhelmed her when she allowed herself to even consider it.
“I understand Marion, I feel you, you know I would never leave my boys, or you my love” They hugged with Marions’ tears being wiped dry with his hospital gown one side and Michaels gentle hand on the other.
Michael was a gentle giant, at 6’5” and 240lbs he was a very large man, yet his demeanour was soft and caring, whilst being firm and honest. His father was a police officer, as too was his grandfather. At 32 and just over 10 years in the force Marion felt he really should be off general duites, and something she had been pushing for over the last couple of years.
Michael found it hard to explain that promotion would come easier if he joined the lodge.
