Solace Moon

My heart was racing as I fled in the direction of the crossroads. I inhaled the dry Mojave Desert air to lungs crying defeat. I struggled to stay focused through the unfamiliar terrain. I fought against my mind’s replay of events. The sound of quads roared in the distance. I started to keep an eye out for a place to hide, aware they were gaining on me. Then something incredible happened. I began to feel super light. On either side I was lifted under my arm by Spirit, in the same manner I had witnessed Saul’s soldiers carry their wounded comrade. My weight borne, I barely felt any impact with the ground other than a light brush of foot. I travelled faster than ever before, and I was no longer out of breath. Ahead the silver taxi was waiting. What a relieving sight. The driver saw me and, leaning over, pushed open the back door. I heard him start the engine and realized it was because the quads had stopped. I was almost there. Twenty metres at most. A woman shouted out. Beside me cottonwood splinters ricocheted. Piercing pain shot through the top of my left arm, but we raced on undeterred.
