Now let’s talk briefly about what an investment is and what it isn’t. I’ll elaborate on investments frequently in this book, so it is important to define what I consider an investment to be. In order to build wealth, you must have a firm grasp of this concept too. in·vest·ment inˈves(t)mənt noun 1. the action or process of investing money for profit or material result. This is true, but by no means complete. You are making an investment of time, energy and effort to read and process this book. You may have even made an investment of some money to purchase it. I define investment in two parts: 1) Any place you put money where you expect it to grow. 2) any allocation of time, effort, energy or attention from which you expect a benefit or positive effect on your quality of life. I don’t think the word investment should be limited to a monetary meaning. For example, when you take classes to improve your skills or your competency, you are investing both money - a precious asset, but also time - a more precious and fleeting commodity. Money is undoubtedly an important and valuable asset, everyone knows this. However, time is finite. You only have so much time in a day, a week, a month, a year and in fact, your life. That makes your time your most precious asset. You will never have more time. You will never be able to buy more time. You will only be able to maximize the time you have. Many people believe that time is expendable. There is a fatal error in this thinking, pun intended. I want to challenge your ideas about time as it relates to value, life and money. Time is money. Time is value. Time is life. You might have heard all of the world’s most renowned investors and famous billionaires utter these very same words. You have likely heard the most influential teachers, gurus and spiritual leaders say the same thing. I will tell you, they are all absolutely right. You are either gaining or losing with your time, and it’s all in how you choose to spend each moment of it.
