REVIEW This is Martin Kari at his thought-provoking best ! He offers, as always, some challenging ideas for us to read about and to think about. His characters come alive when we share their working and private world. He has deliberately chosen a wide range of professions and professionals to observe and has given us an insight into their ambitions and their disappointments, be it doctors, teachers or mechanics. Martin paints a landscape overflowing with ordinary people and then he makes them extraordinary for us, the reader. As most of our own lives are indeed “comedies”, then playing the “comedian” is often our chosen role. Martin’s wry sense of humour is there, if the reader but looks for it. Highly entertaining, forward-thinking and yet appreciative of life’s daily dramas, this book will provide something for everyone. In the eyes of this reader, Martin’s work is very readily readable as we see a little of ourselves in his clever portrayal of the complexities of ‘the simple life’. I have appreciated the opportunity to be such a very small cog in the big wheel of Martin’s work. In other words, I have thoroughly enjoyed my “comedian-role”. REVIEW In these stories – or, as the author calls them comedies – Martin Kari has taken on the ambitious task to look into our modern society by highlighting one working day of ten professionals how their day goes. A wide scale is selected here – and also surprising : From the King to the Beggar, from the “Garbo” to the top-surgeon. The author demonstrates in minute details to the reader how each of his heroes goes about his/her professional task. The reader gets here also to know the interaction of a private and a professional life. We are asked to revise our antiquated social ladder-thinking. The day of toolmaker Michael deserves special attention. It’s not by accident that the author knows very detailed also about a modern toolmaker task, as he himself has well performed in this highly specialized technological field. I’d like to suggest, there is a comparison to a surgeon. Each story tells that a worker, no matter on which level he/she is operating, everybody is subjected to a comedian-role especially from outside. The title “Beggar & other Comedians” hits the “nail” on its head. On the other hand, the title could be compared with the parable of Jesu’s Sermon on the Mount (St. Matthew 5, 14-16) : “ A light is not ignited to serve the comedian, but to send its light from a candelabrum to all inhabitants, who are in the house.” The author has brought in his book this fact in relation to his actors, who live in glasshouses, out of which they can’t escape easily and are told better not to throw stones. In comedy number two, the considerate beggar moves in a discussion a passer-by to acknowledge :” We all live isolated in our own world and hardly recognize the different worlds other people live in. You opened my eyes to see what really goes on in our community.” I can recommend this book to everybody who wants a closer look into reality of today’s society with fun included.
