Once upon a time, some tiny eggs--smaller than your little finger—were laid on a maple leaf. From these eggs hatched green caterpillars. The feistiest caterpillar was named Katie.
“I’m hungry,” Katie said. She crawled to the edge of the leaf and began munching. As she didn’t eat that much, Miranda Maple Tree, whose leaves they were, didn’t mind the sacrifice.
Each day, just as the spring sun was rising, Katie woke up, thanked God for her life, thanked Miranda Maple for the meal of leaves, and began to munch away. “There must be something more to do with my life than just eat and grow bigger,” she thought, her mouth full. Just then she heard soft singing coming from nearby. It sounded calm and joyful, almost like the wind. Katie raised her tiny head as far as she could from the leaf she sat upon.
“‘I wish I knew my song to sing. Then I would know who I am, and that special gift I have to share here on Mother Earth. I know! I’ll go around to my Nature friends and listen to their songs, too. Maybe a memory will be sparked, and I’ll remember mine.’”
Katie Caterpillar listens to Pamela Pine Tree, Tommy Turtle, Felicia Fawn, and Bright-Eyes the Eagle sing their songs until Mother Nature gives her a chrysalis….
“Thank you. God, that I came to be my Self, changed from a worm to butterfly….”
