About the Book

Why do so many people still struggle after years of therapy, self-help, and genuine effort? We have learned to challenge unrealistic thoughts, only to find ourselves caught in endless cycles of internal arguments and back-and-forth. We have learned skills to regulate our emotions and practised mindfulness, only to find that those emotions return — sometimes with greater force. We know more about trauma, mental health and emotional wellbeing than ever before, yet so many of us continue to struggle with self-doubt, anxiety, stress and depression. The answer isn’t to try harder. It is to recognise that we often see our internal struggles — the fear, shame, insecurity, sadness and even inertia — as enemies within ourselves. We fight them, resist them, try to control them or push them away. And when they return, we assume we have failed. In No Parts Left Behind, clinical psychologist Dr Maria-Elena Lukeides draws on almost thirty years of clinical practice, bringing together mindfulness, compassion-focused and acceptance-based therapies, and modern neuroscience to offer a different way of understanding emotional suffering. Anxiety, sadness, shame and fear are not the enemy. The suffering begins when we decide that these experiences mean something is wrong with us, and turn away from the parts of ourselves we would rather not feel. These parts are not only not the enemy; they are often the parts of us that need our attention, care and nurturing the most. The goal is not to get rid of these parts or become someone who never struggles. It is to change the relationship we have with ourselves, so we can stop fighting and start living. No Parts Left Behind is an invitation to end the war within — not by becoming a different person, but by learning to make room for every part of who you already are.

About the Author

Dr Maria-Elena Lukeides is a doctorate-trained Clinical Psychologist with more than twenty-eight years of experience helping people navigate anxiety, trauma, depression, OCD, relationship difficulties and the many challenges that shape the human experience. Throughout her career, she has worked across acute mental health, community mental health, rehabilitation services and private practice, supporting thousands of people in moving beyond suffering towards greater psychological freedom and wellbeing. Her work bridges contemporary psychological science with contemplative wisdom, integrating evidence-based therapies—including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), attachment theory and neuroscience—with mindfulness, meditation and embodied practice. She is also trained in psychedelic-assisted therapy and was among the first psychologists in Australia to be qualified to provide psilocybin- and MDMA-assisted psychotherapy following the landmark rescheduling of these treatments. Alongside her clinical work, Maria-Elena is a meditation and spiritual teacher, retreat facilitator, keynote speaker and clinical supervisor. She has guided hundreds of students through mindfulness and personal transformation programs, leads retreats, delivers workshops and speaks on the integration of psychology, mindfulness and human flourishing. Her work is grounded in the belief that science and spirituality are not opposing paths, but complementary ways of understanding what it means to heal and become fully human. For almost three decades, one question has remained at the centre of her work: Why do so many people continue to suffer, even after years of therapy, insight and self-development? No Parts Left Behind is her answer. Drawing together nearly three decades of clinical experience, thousands of therapeutic conversations and a lifetime of contemplative practice, the book offers a compassionate, evidence-informed framework for emotional healing. It proposes that lasting transformation begins not by changing our emotions, but by changing our relationship with the parts of ourselves that experience them.
