Jake woke the next morning from a restless sleep. He peeked in on Cassidy to see how she was doing. Yesterday was a whirlwind of emotions for her that left her unsteady and a little tipsy after several glasses of wine. As Jake cracked the door on the guest room he carried Cassidy to last night, he saw the bed was empty and void of blanket, bedspread, and pillow. Descending the stairway quickly Jake went straight to the care unit in the clinic. There she was. On the floor wrapped in a blanket and bedspread. Red was curled around her legs resting his nose on her ankle. Cassidy on her side, arm around Casper. All sound asleep. With a quick sigh of relief and a tug of something he did not want to recognize, Jake made his way to the kitchen to make coffee and prepare for whatever this day would bring. He prided himself on being an even keel kind of guy. But by the end of yesterday, his even disposition was about to break. He could handle the emergency of medical procedures. He doesn’t get a lot of bullet wounds to people’s pets, except of course, for the occasional hunting dog accident. Those don’t turn out as well as yesterday’s surgery. Seeing Cassidy again was inevitable. He knew she was back and had had time to prepare for seeing her sometime. It was a small town, he figured he would run into her at the grocery store or Max’s Bar and Grill. Max’s was the most popular place to hang out, eat a burger and have a beer. But seeing her in the state she was in when she brought Casper, and her deterioration of spirit was difficult then the night brought more bizarre information. Seriously, a murder? A hit man after her? What the hell has she been into? This just made no sense. He was struggling with his feelings of just wanting to protect her and make her safe. He didn’t know how to do that. He didn’t know what he was up against. That unsettled him the most. And would she even allow him to help her.

About the Book
Cassidy had her life planned out, until five years ago when she was brutally attacked trying to walk back to her dorm room from an April Fool’s day celebration at the local bar with her classmates. When she survives the attack, she runs away. She has been running and lying to herself since that day. Now she finds herself home again after five years. Due to her Aunt’s Illness, she is the surprised owner of the house and farm she grew up in. A house that is now a crime scene because someone just murdered her friend Amy. Police say the bullet was meant for her. As she is driving her dog Casper, who was also shot in the incident, to the local vet she is preparing to meet her ex-boyfriend. The veterinarian she was supposed to marry and go into business with. The one she ran away from five years ago with a trail of lies and abandonment. Little does she know the lies that wait for her as she tries to determine who is trying to kill her and why.
About the Author
Roberta lives in Oregon where this story takes place. She retired from the IT department of the Oregon Department of Transportation. She is an animal lover, which comes out in her writing. No animal will ever die in any of her books so read with peace. Roberta loves gardening, quilting, watercolor painting and occasionally pottery when she is not writing. Roberta is a member of the Hay House Writers Community and the Willamette Writers Community.
