Language of the Sacred

Acceptance, prayer and quiet reflection a few times a day allows me to be in closer communication with Spirit and people. It brings peace and guidance to my life. I have learned to follow even the most subtle nudges. Here is one of those stories. I was on my way home from visiting my parents, when in my mind I saw the face of a family friend who lived in the next town. I felt called to visit. I tried to talk myself out of it. I had laundry and many other chores to do when I got home. But the feeling would not go away. The usual way home to my apartment would pass the very street this man lived on. I felt a pull in me the closer I came to the street. I argued with myself in my head. What was I going to say when I showed up at his door? Was he even home? I couldn’t show up without calling. All these excuses were rolling around in my mind. I was not paying attention and I hit the curb on the passenger side of the car. The car jumped over the curb and rolled onto the beginning of his street. Okay I thought, I will give in and visit him. I parked outside his house and knocked on his side door several times, wondering what I was going to say. But the music coming from the inside of his house was very loud. I contemplated excuses such as needing to use the bathroom, I was in the neighborhood, or was just thinking of him, before considering the truth of my calling, that I needed to visit him. It’s not like he didn’t know of my gifts, because I had done a reading for him in the past. When he opened the door, he was disheveled and crying. His eyes were swollen. He looked surprised and called out my name. He gave me a big hug and didn’t let me go. I could smell he had been drinking heavily. “Can I come in?” I asked. He led me into the kitchen and he spoke before I could speak. “I can’t believe it. I can’t believe you’re here. I asked God to send me an angel to help me and it’s you.” He hugged me tight again. I turned and looked down on the kitchen table and stiffened. A gun was pointing directly towards the door as if it had been waiting to be used. Horrified, I asked, “Is that loaded? Why is it here and is it yours?” He stammered, “It’s mine, it’s loaded, it’s legal and I was going to kill myself. But when I heard a knock at the door, I put it down on the table.” I moved carefully to the other side of the table and asked him to unload it and put it away. He did. He locked it up. I asked if I could hold the key because I would feel safer. He agreed. He proceeded to tell me his woes and personal reasons for wanting to leave the earth. I listened and asked him if I could use my hands to work on him with energy. I put my hands on his head and heart and sent him love. He relaxed enough and fell asleep. I threw out the rest of the liquor and dumped the empty bottles in the trash. I stayed with him until midnight then went home. I also took the key to his gun lock box with me. The next morning, I called to check on him and he was doing better. We had a discussion about his drinking and getting rid of his gun. I asked him if he would ever try to hurt himself again. He chuckled when he answered me. “I asked God for an angel and he sent me one. I was saved last night. I said if there was a purpose to my life then send me an angel to stop my pain. I know now that there is a God and I am loved. You are my angel.” It was a happy ending and I was glad I was there for him. We did keep in touch for many years afterwards.
