In the abovementioned study, the sampling method used was purposive sampling. As the name suggests, purposive sampling is employed with specific criteria in mind. At the hospitals, the researchers did not recruit people who did not use yoga or complementary therapies because that would not yield data that address the research objectives and in-depth interview questions. Purposive sampling enables the researchers to reach out to specific groups of people. Sometimes, another method known as snowball sampling may be used by researchers, especially if it is difficult to recruit some participants. For example, researchers may wish to interview respondents with an extremely rare ailment. They may ask their only participant to refer them to other possible interviewees as they may be in the same support group for the rare ailment. Apart from purposive and snowball sampling, another method known as ‘convenience sampling’ is less frequently used. This means the researchers may recruit people they know or anyone who is within their vicinity of the research. The drawback of this method is that it is not rigorous at all. If the aim of the study is to generalize findings to an entire population of yoga practitioners in a city or a country, it would make little sense for a researcher to reach out to anyone whom they know as the results will not be representative. Instead, for such studies, researchers often prefer to employ more rigorous methods of sampling such as random sampling, stratified sampling and systematic sampling, to which we now turn.
