Many people unfortunately see themselves, others, and the world in a very negative and undesirable light; perhaps that is partly because our brains have been hardwired to quickly see problems and dangers since our survival depends on that. As a psychiatrist, I’ve seen many avoidable and self-created maladies. Struggling to please others while feeling unsupported themselves, people often feel exploited. Many people shoulder enormous pressure and stress trying to save the world and suffer chronic pain as they lurch from crisis to crisis with a bloated sense of responsibility. We create stories about ourselves and others that become powerful undertows that imperil us and get in our way. Good and kind people groan under the weight they alone have stacked on their shoulders. While people crave a sense of purpose, they often feel alone, disconnected, and embattled in an uncaring and hostile world. Many people dwell on their flaws and feel they don’t measure up to others who seem to have much more. People strain to help others but feel frustrated that their efforts are not warmly received or beneficial. Most people want to believe in the inner goodness of humanity, though they feel chronically smacked around by others’ selfishness and feel used by those they care about. Confusion and disenchantment give way to cynicism and apathy as people struggle to make sense of the confusing messages they receive from others. I see patients who work hard to make a difference in the world and often feel drained, like they are spinning in circles, going nowhere. People often find the pursuit of happiness to be an arduous task.
The SQUIRT will help you relate to yourself, others, and the world more effectively and easily. This book will help you see people and the universe, of which we are all a part, as positive spiritual forces and rejoin the vital streams of energy within and around you. String theory and quantum theory have revealed a universe far more integrated and interconnected than we ever imagined, and the core ideas of those theories provide an undercurrent of support for the SQUIRT. Always resonating with the spirit of water, the SQUIRT will help you see your loving, bare essence while helping you see the positive core of those who may be most difficult and problematic in your life. The SQUIRT aims to improve the way you relate to everything and will help you see the powerful impact that our thoughts, feelings, beliefs, attitudes, values, perspectives, memories, personal narratives, and intentions have on all our relationships. It may be hard to imagine that you really can have more of what you want while working less strenuously to attain it, but that is the natural consequence of a well-lived life. The key is awareness. Awareness of who you are, what you want, what you need, and how to attain your needs and goals are the central themes of this book. Though our lives are lived in specific and nuanced ways, the SQUIRT is about seeing the universal needs and goals in all people, life, and the world.
We are immersed in a world that propagates many negative and confusing messages about the essence of human nature. Our self-esteems come primarily from two sources, ourselves and others. Young children mostly derive their self-esteem based on the way other people relate to them; older children and adults derive their self-esteem mostly by the way they relate to themselves. Understanding the nature of our relationships and the accuracy of the messages we give and receive is critical to improving our mental, physical, and spiritual health.
This book will help you see yourself as a fundamentally positive being who is part of a much larger, constructive universe. The message of this book is quite simple yet profound: the secret to living a spiritual, vibrant, and creative life lies in the proper understanding of the power of giving and receiving in perfect harmony. The SQUIRT will help you improve the quality and effectiveness of the relationships you have with everything: yourself, others, your creative spirit, the natural world, time, space, the past, the future, and Harmony. Harmony is the term I use to represent the absolute, integrated expression of all the matter, energy, and intelligence of the universe. It’s impossible to have musical harmony without two or more pitches, adding support for the notion that the most appropriate pronouns for Harmony are They/Them. Harmony is a singular intelligence and energy, yet They are every single entity at once. There’s no reason to gender the all-encompassing energy of the universe; Harmony transcends all such categorizations and has a spiritual essence that could never, in good conscience, be called “It.”
This book will help you develop your awareness of the intimate connection between people and nature in a way that will radically transform your perspective on everything. The more connected we are to everything through the mutuality of giving and receiving, the more we resonate with vitality and purpose. The SQUIRT will help us remain in the deep center of the gently flowing stream of life, where we move forward with the least effort and become the best person we can be. This is how we do the greatest good and leave the world a little better place than we found it.
