Many people unfortunately see themselves, others, and the world in a very negative and undesirable light; perhaps that is partly because our brains have been hardwired to quickly see problems and dangers since our survival depends on that. As a psychiatrist, I’ve seen many avoidable and self-created maladies. Struggling to please others while feeling unsupported themselves, people often feel exploited. Many people shoulder enormous pressure and stress trying to save the world and suffer chronic pain as they lurch from crisis to crisis with a bloated sense of responsibility. We create stories about ourselves and others that become powerful undertows that imperil us and get in our way. Good and kind people groan under the weight they alone have stacked on their shoulders. While people crave a sense of purpose, they often feel alone, disconnected, and embattled in an uncaring and hostile world. Many people dwell on their flaws and feel they don’t measure up to others who seem to have much more. People strain to help others but feel frustrated that their efforts are not warmly received or beneficial. Most people want to believe in the inner goodness of humanity, though they feel chronically smacked around by others’ selfishness and feel used by those they care about. Confusion and disenchantment give way to cynicism and apathy as people struggle to make sense of the confusing messages they receive from others. I see patients who work hard to make a difference in the world and often feel drained, like they are spinning in circles, going nowhere. People often find the pursuit of happiness to be an arduous task. The SQUIRT will help you relate to yourself, others, and the world more effectively and easily. It may be hard to imagine that you really can have more of what you want while working less strenuously to attain it, but that is the natural consequence of a well-lived life. The key is awareness. Harmony is a singular intelligence and energy, yet They are every single entity at once. There’s no reason to gender the all-encompassing energy of the universe; Harmony transcends all such categorizations and has a spiritual essence that could never, in good conscience, be called “It.” This book will help you develop your awareness of the intimate connection between people and nature in a way that will radically transform your perspective on everything.
