Sitting in the living room of your beautiful house, ready to fly home after one of several wonderful stays, I look up and see on the shelves a piece of art from my parents’ collection. I gave it to you before I moved back to San Diego. It is a beautiful statue of a mother holding a baby in her arms. I especially wanted you to have that piece, as it reflected my long-held dreams of holding you in my arms. In that moment, I am overwhelmed with a feeling of awe and gratitude for my relationship with you and your family. Never in a million years would I have believed this was possible. I shout up the stairs “picture time!” and 8 beautiful children, none of whom contain a drop of my blood, come bounding out the front door for a series of photos with Grandma. I gave you up for adoption at birth.

Their Daughter, My Baby tells the true story of a young woman who makes the painful and heartbreaking decision to give her first child up for adoption, at a time when unwed pregnancies (or mothers) were not accepted or supported. Told as a love story to her child, enduring love and tenacity gives her a second chance to be a part of her daughter’s life. Their Daughter, My Baby is for any family whose lives have been touched by adoption. It inspires hope for children as they seek a path to their birth families, or birth parents who, through adoption, to find the distant child that lives in their hearts. About the Author
Maria Salazar Suggett is mother to 5 adult children and grandmother to 17. A retired educator, she was a successful grant writer for 25 years, but personal writing was an unmet goal near to her heart. In her premiere book, novella style, she writes a love story to honor her firstborn child, whom she gave up for adoption in the mid-1970’s.
