Chapter 1: As a Human Resources Director and a US Navy veteran, the philosophies are so similar as the Navy has Honor, Courage, and Commitment as to key points in becoming an effective leader. HR Directors cannot function without loyalty, trust, and commitment to the process in an organization/agency to optimize performance and productivity. What I am seeing in our young men and women entering the workforce through interviews is troubling, but how new hires are being handled by leadership once they are onboarded is worse. These things can be taught and acquired from networking and research with focus. They are not aware of what a sense of community and brotherhood can foster from a new employee preparing for those difficult days at work or challenges in life. The discussions or performance meetings seem to be more confrontational as employees are quick to walk away versus compromise or even listen to reason. This behavior comes from the lack of an organizational and personnel foundation of accountability and respect, which has created a burden for HR Teams to recruit, hire, and retain workers today. I have always been told that respect is earned, but trust and loyalty are experienced when a team or individuals are tested. Those moments of testing come quickly and are easily remembered, so one must be aware of those moments that will define you as a trusted leader.

About the Author
Patrick Pendleton was born in 1973 in Winchester Virginia and was raised in a small farming town of Mount Jackson, VA. He has been a Human Resources Administrator and Director for multiple cities in the states of South Carolina, Virginia, and currently Georgia. He has also served in the US Navy from 1999 - 2007, as an Operations Specialist, Tactical Operations Coxswain Instructor, and Master at Arms. Currently the Human Resources Director of the City of Atlanta Georgia, Public Safety Departments.
