“Why would The Universe tell me to move, and then just abandon me? I’m going to be homeless in a week.” I sobbed to Collette on the phone after an afternoon of fruitless house-hunting. “Why don’t you go ahead and look at the Cape Cod your Realtor keeps telling you about?” Collette said. “I can’t afford it.” I whined. “I don’t know that that’s true, mom, and at this point, I don’t think you have any other choice.” Collette, always the voice of reason in my otherwise unstructured life. So, I called my realtor and grudgingly agreed to go look at the house that evening after work. The second we walked in the front door I noticed a beautiful wooden crucifix that a previous owner had left hanging above the entryway into the living room. As a huge believer in signs, I made a mental note of this, and stepped into the living room. And I was home. There was no doubt that I had been led to this home by Divine providence. From the fireplace in the living room to the spacious room that would become my studio, and the fenced- in third of an acre that was like a private dog park for my little Pierre, it was as if this home had been built specifically with me in mind. “I love it! I’ll take it. Where do I sign the papers?” I was babbling at this point, and not the least bit worried that I couldn’t afford it. I was being asked by Divine Wisdom to set aside my preconceived ideas of lack and once again simply trust my GPS. It had brought me the exact house that I had asked for, wrapped it in a bow, and now simply asked me to trust that all the details would work themselves out. I have been in my dream home for five years now, never missed a rent payment, and wake up every morning, look out onto my garden from the big picture window in my kitchen, and say a prayer of gratitude for the home I almost let slip away. Oh, and by the way, that crucifix over the door? My landlord, who had just repainted and cleaned the entire house, says he never saw it before, and doesn’t know where it came from.
