A Surgeon's Odyssey

One evening I was studying in my apartment when the phone rang. “You’d better come and see this” said the nurse in charge of the emergency department. “My goodness” or words to that effect I said to myself. There was this man with the broken off kitchen scissor blades sticking out of the top of his head. The x-ray showed the blades went half way into his brain. Incredible force must have been used to plummet the weapon into his cranium. This was definitely beyond my expertise! I called in a neurosurgeon who shaved the head removed some surrounding bone then very delicately extricated the offending foreign body. There was a very real risk of torrential bleeding but lo and behold it did not happen and when the patient recovered his only pathology was an inability to see peripherally. What a let off!
