INTRODUCTION God’s Plan for Service began in 2008 with weekly radio broadcasts two minutes in length and designed to encourage people to think about the Christian faith as it applies to our daily lives. Thus admonitions from the Bible along with motivation and inspiration to live the life God would have us carry out on a daily basis became the theme. In time, sending the program by email to interested persons was started and this now goes out at no cost to the subscribers every Monday. You can add your name to this list by sending us your name and email address. There is no cost. God’s Plan for Service is a nonprofit organization guided by a four member Board of Directors. It is financially supported through donations that are tax deductible in the USA. The organization has no paid staff with its primary expense being radio time. Contributions may be sent to the address below to support this ministry. GPS is based in Brentwood (Williamson County), Tennessee next to Nashville, Tennessee. When the organization started I was President of Williamson Christian College. When I retired from that role in 2009, GPS continued and now reaches a larger audience through radio, emails each week and monthly in the Nashville Christian Family magazine. The contents of this book were selected from the weekly programs over eleven years. Some 182 of these programs were selected to be a part of this book. The selection was based in part on how well a particular topic contributed to the title of the book, Ounces of Wisdom. New programs continue to be written and recorded at WAKM in Franklin, TN where the time and support of Tom Lawrence has been instrumental in the program’s success. There are themes in the teachings of Jesus that are emphasized in this book. The ideas for the programs come from many sources ranging from the Bible to secular sources, both historical and contemporary. The key has been whether the source has something to say that the reader or listener could use to make life more bountiful personally as well as pleasing to God. You are encouraged to think more deeply about what God has in store for you and where you need to step up to fulfill the gifts and opportunities God has provided. Each of us has an impact on others which should be considered each day. This impact allows each of us to multiply our positive and faithful efforts to make the world around us a better one. We should seek to utilize our gifts in an effort to reach our potential while at the same time being a role model to help others reach their potential (their excellence). The more we live our lives pleasing to God, the closer we are to Him and the more we are prepared for life eternal with Him. The work of the Board of God’s Plan for Service which commissioned this book has been appreciated. A special appreciation is to Dr. Richard K. Smith for serving as Editor. About the Author
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Dr. Oosting grew up in Muskegon, Michigan and graduated from the University of Michigan (history) with the M.A. from Central Michigan University and the Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. He has been a high school teacher, college professor, college dean and president as well as a consultant to about 150 Christian colleges and universities. He wrote The Christian’s Guide to Effective Personal Management and numerous college and university courses and articles. He and his wife, Jacklyn, reside in Brentwood, TN. ABOUT THE EDITOR Dr. Richard K. Smith is a member of the God’s Plan for Service Board of Directors. He grew up in Ohio and earned a B. A. from Asbury College, a B. S. from Nyack College and an M. A. and a Doctor of Missiology from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. He has served as pastor in West Virginia, Ohio and Indiana, missionary to Indonesia, faculty member at Toccoa Falls College in Taccoa, Georgia, adjunct faculty for several institutions and ten years as Senior Consultant with Oosting and Associates, Inc. He and his wife Janet, a school principal, live in Pataskala, Ohio.
