Taking Back Your Power The subject of giving away one’s power is an important theme in today’s world. We find ourselves inadvertently giving away our power in too many situations and in too many ways. There are many situations in life where we give away our power; I have listed some of them here. Examples: • Gurus. • Co-dependency. • Never complaining. • Being ‘a doormat’ in a relationship or a friendship. • The ‘victim’ syndrome. • Being constantly negative in life. • Being subservient to our boss to an unreasonable degree. • Allowing friends or relatives to dominate us. There are, by contrast, many situations in life where we can take back our power from others or from situations; here are some of them listed below. Examples: • Leaving a violent partner. • Standing up to a bully or if your child is bullied at school. • Standing up to your boss if he or she is taking advantage of you. • Not accepting sexual harassment! • Making your own decisions and acting upon them! • Breaking away from parental karma and control. • Checking the contents and ingredients in the foods we consume. • Not leaving a tip should we decide the service is rubbish! • Voicing our true feelings in a situation which we feel is wrong! Some writers, like that of Liz Adamson, ‘hit the nail squarely on the head’ with her enlightened take on the subject of personal power: ‘First I need to differentiate between external and inner personal power. Virtually all the examples we have of power would involve the former. We see it in politicians, dictators and those with money, status or position that can be wielded over other people. We may associate this sort of power with corruption and sleaze. Those with external power will often render other people powerless. Those who seek external power will often do so because they are not in touch with their own inner power. ‘Personal power does not seek to dominate or negatively affect others; indeed, it will work to empower those around us. Our personal power will work to generate the energy needed to create what we need and want in our lives. If we do not have this we may feel stuck or stagnant. Nothing happens and we may feel tired and apathetic a great deal of the time. The less energy we have to send out, the less will be able to come back to us in the form of opportunities, miracles and gifts.’ Liz Adamson. (24) There are very many forms of giving away our personal power; some of these include giving our power away to a lover, a bully or a religious figure in society. With the lover, we give our power away because we want something in return: love! With the bully, we give our power away because of fear to do the right thing. With the religious figure, we give our personal power to them because we believe that somehow they are spiritually superior to us and that they may intercede for us with the higher-powers. Personal power is also connected with boundaries and how we construct and maintain our boundaries. If our boundaries are weak, then we will be the plaything of others and of many situations. Constructing and maintaining our personal boundaries with others is very important. It is our natural right to have strong and well defined boundaries with others; otherwise people may intrude into our personal space, like a thief, and demonstrate their keen lack of respect and even hostility towards us. A very good example of personal inner power was that of Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi did not derive his power from outside; from any position or from any title; his power emanated from within. His concept of satyagraha meaning devotion to Love & Truth, through non-violence. Gandhi held real convictions and real inner power because he had spent years in India, solitary, studying himself and the nature of Cosmic Truth. He was a man of self-knowledge devoted to Truth & justice. Gandhi had both Moral Force and Psychic Force at his disposal when he negotiated with the British Empire for an independent India. The Man with Inner-Power: A man imbued with inner-power has a great thirst for Knowledge and for self-Knowledge; he understands the need for universal peace, harmony and justice. His highest inner quest is to set out on a voyage of discovery and to innovate. He has a great respect for all women and shows this at every opportunity. The natural environment is very important for him both in terms of conservation and enjoyment; absorbing all the good energy from nature being a very important facet of his existence. He is capable of speaking his truth and will not shy away from this, when the situation demands it. He will not always choose the path of least resistance and will often follow a course which may seem to others, difficult and thankless. The man of inner-power has conquered violence in himself; he will not be provoked easily and considers violence only in self-defence situations. This man will carry genuine compassion for others and real empathy too. He is never too busy to stop and help a stranger in distress, because he knows that, in reality, beyond social convention he and the stranger are one! He also has a great power of adaptive thinking or thinking outside of the box. He is good in a crisis and will not hesitate when others freeze from fear or self doubt. He is courageous. He is not interested in having power over others or controlling people in a self-interested fashion. He does not need to be controlling in order to feel good about himself; his motivation comes from a set of internally generated principles and not from culture-bound attitudes and prejudices.

About the Author
The writer is a student of esotericism, or what might be referred to as the ancient wisdom of the Earth. In recent times, this wisdom has re-surfaced in our contemporary culture, in the form of the teachings of G.I. Gurdjieff and Peter D. Ouspensky. Gurdjieff explains to us in his magnum opus, that, this wisdom was the mainspring of several very ancient and advanced lost civilizations on our world - civilizations which have disappeared in the mists of time. These lost civilizations are only now coming to light through the insight and efforts of individual researchers such as Sam Osmanagich PhD, Carmen Boulter PhD, and John Anthony West - an independent Egyptologist.
