Conversations with a Gnome

"I had to take vacation time from work . I’d used up my sick leave. Colds, sinus infections, migraines, or constant bleeding assailed me. Sometimes I blamed it on the air quality, but the managers said the air system was working fine. Other times, I blamed the chemicals in the rugs, or artificial walls of the cubicles in which we sat. Who knows? I bled all the time. Wearing sanitary napkins as well as tampons, and going to the bathroom every ten minutes to check I hadn't leaked on to my clothes and seat, and managers watching their watches to see how long I took to do this; I was living in deep pits.
Added to this, the gnomes left me. I went to an acupuncturist, but my insurance didn't pay for this so I stopped, and then I had operations, which helped awhile. My mind began to clear and one of the first things I heard when I looked out my window in the morning was a bird calling, and I imagined it passing over the lawn, although I could not see it from my bed. I imagined myself on the current of air that it stirred up over the lawn, and I immediately felt like rising up out of bed. The mind has great power. I told myself, and I can get well again.
One day, Gnome suddenly jumped on my bed. He had returned. So, I asked him, “How is it I feel that bird helped me and healed a piece of earth it flew over?”
“It flew in a motion of energy, which was like wind and went over the ground beneath it. You can always access the healing the birds give to you, only you have to be in rest and a place of stillness to receive it,” Gnome answered.
Invisible currents of motion set up when the birds fly. Wind is a powerful force for us. Each wind is the earth’s breath and when it touches us, we receive freshness of life. We, even unconsciously, receive grace and it constantly enters our lives.
From my room, I hear wind brushing branches against the walls. Wind movement produces circulation over the earth. These are healing forces. Although I can’t see Gnome because my energy is low, I can hear him. He shuffles around. Curtains stir by his presence."

About the Book
This tale is woven in imagination yet reality of how an ‘invisible kingdom’ helped me get through a tough decade of family life, career, and keeping up personal creativity. At the end of each day I simply sat back and used fantasy to see what it might be like for invisible gnomes, the ‘Little People,’ as my Irish granny called them, to view us human beings. Or so-called human—what is that?
About the Author
I have written poetry for many years. I worked as a feature journalist for seventeen years, then returned to university, receiving an MFA in Creative Writing. Since then I have written in novel form, hoping someday to return to the simplicity and essence of spirit writing in poetry.
I grew up outside Philadelphia, attended schools in Vancouver, Montreal, Switzerland, Ireland, and Scotland, as well as the United States. As you can see, I love the international flavors of foods so to speak!
I live in Maine, having raised four children. I work with special needs adults and children, and write articles for a local paper. I love nature, gathering wild foods, berries, blossoms, espousing the permaculture movement of using local foods. I play fiddle, lyre, and piano. We live in a small university town, where writers, painters, and music abound.
