Even though I was not some Mother Theresa or a Gandhi, my life did make a difference. And on the day that I do leave this earth, I will leave it a better place. My light was not placed under a bushel basket. I allowed it to shine. And that light was a light from within. One of the best lessons I shared with the women at the rehab center was the following.
There were three candles and a glow stick that were used for the illustration along with my breath, water, and a brass snuffer. It compared getting your light from outside sources or coming from within. Taking the first candle I told them that if their light came from an outside source when the winds of difficult things in life blow your way, it would go out. Then I blew on the candle and the glow stick. The light of the candle left, yet the wind did nothing to change the light of the glow stick. Taking the water I told them that when they seem to be drowning from the hurts of life that if their light is not from within that it would be gone. Dipping the candle in the water extinguished the light, yet the submersion of didn't change the glow stick. And when someone tries to snuff out your light, if it is a light within you, they cannot do that. Putting the snuffer over the candle killed the light, but placing it on the glow stick couldn't touch that light. But the best part was yet to be revealed. In order for the glow stick to glow, it had to first be broken. It has been through the brokenness of my life that has made my inner light shine. My heart is more compassionate and less judgmental. My inner self is at peace.
