About the Book

The Buried War is a bugle cry; a Reveille of rage and a eulogy for the lost souls of war. It is the story of my father, his PTSD as a WW II veteran, my own journey as a Franciscan monk and heartfelt struggle with depression throughout my life. It is the story of a family from Alliance, Ohio weathering the storm of incredible poverty and hopelessness while living with the insanity of a father impaired and afflicted by the war. It is the story of my search for purpose and meaning by following the way of St. Francis of Assisi even after leaving behind the robe, the cord and the sandals.

About the Author

Bill Beltz was born in Alliance, Ohio in 1948. He holds an Ed. M. in Psychology and Learning Disabilities. After spending several years as a Franciscan monk and teacher he is now an entrepreneur with a business that he has owned and managed for over thirty-five years. He is a Board Member of the Thomas Wolfe Society, a worldwide organization that encourages readership and creative writing and is also a contributor to the Thomas Wolfe Review. His wife Karen is a retired educator. One of his favorite hobbies is section hiking the Appalachian Trail. This is his debut memoir.

"In his memoir,The Buried War, Bill Beltz provides a powerful testimony to the strength of faith and love in the face of seemingly insurmountable hardship. He recounts the poverty of his upbringing, including the abuse by his World-War-II-veteran father who was suffering from then-undiagnosed PTSD. Throughout the novel, he describes the far-reaching effects that this dysfunctional family life had on him and the rest of his family.

Reared a devout Catholic, Beltz first attempted to find strength outside of himself through the church: he left home at a very young age and began training for the priesthood. Not finding the answers in this profession and still struggling with depression and need for meaning and fulfillment, he pursued other avenues, ultimately marrying, having children, embarking on a successful career, and realizing that he was stronger than he thought.

The book is heart-wrenching, as Beltz relates the emotional and physical pain inflicted by an alcoholic father who was not able to talk about the horrors of his war experience, only to express himself through rage, unexplainable to him and his family. The reader feels Beltz's pain as he relates his personal trials in his quest for self-discovery and peace. Beltz's vivid descriptions of his relationships, especially with his family, make palpable the role of love and of faith in his being able cope during the low points in his life.

In the ""Afterword,"" Beltz includes a letter that his mother wrote to him not long before her death. In it, she encourages him to write this book. She remarks that I think you could write a book using all of your experiences.... Not many others seem to have that same energy to bring things back. It was like you lost something and need to find it again.

Through this book, Bill Beltz does indeed seem to have found what he was seeking, and his story allows readers to share and to appreciate his struggle. Had she lived long
