Sophie’s Scrumptious Treats

Chapter One: Easy Summer Coolers

These treats are no-cook summer treats from the freezer. You can freeze them in ice cube trays or, for bigger dogs, use small paper cups. I even have bone and paw shaped ice cube trays! Of course, that makes it fun for me and the humans who see the treats and say “Oh, how cute”. I don’t think the dogs care what shape their treats come in.

Sophie’s Peanut Butter Treats

These were Sophie’s favorite summer treat! Very easy to make, no cooking required.

INGREDIENTS

8 oz. vanilla yogurt

4 oz. peanut butter

DIRECTIONS

1) Put the peanut butter into a microwave safe dish and microwave until melted. I use a medium to high level. Check at 20 sec. Peanut butter should be smooth, soft, and easy to stir.

2) Add yogurt to the peanut butter and mix thoroughly.

3) Pour into ice cube trays and freeze.

4) Serve!

Pupsicles

These are similar to the first treats but my Sophie didn’t like them as well. The dogs in the neighborhood seem to love them! They can be a bit messy as they start to melt so feed them outside.

INGREDIENTS

6 oz plain yogurt

1 small banana, mashed

4 oz peanut butter

2 tblsp honey

DIRECTIONS

1) Place all four ingredients in bowl of food processor, blend until smooth

2) Spoon ingredients into ice cube tray.

3) Freeze at least 4 hours before serving.

4) Serve, one per serving.

Summer Delights

These are big dog favorites! Best enjoyed for a snack after a romp in the pool or anytime on a hot summer day.

INGREDIENTS

Fruit of your choice- we use 1 apple and 1 banana but feel free to experiment with any kind you like!

4 oz unsweetened pineapple juice

1 6 oz container low fat yogurt

2 tblsp honey *optional, I don’t use it if I use flavored yogurt

DIRECTIONS

1) Core and cube apple, place in blender or food processor bowl.

2) Pulse or blend until smooth

3) Add cubed banana, then add juice and blend all ingredients until smooth

4) Pour into “pup tray” or ice cube tray or small paper cups and freeze several hours

5) Serve: best to serve outdoors when it’s hot and dogs appreciate the cool flavors. I take one out of the freezer and let it soften for a minute or so and then put it in Rosey’s bowl so she can lick it- like ice cream. If you serve it in the paper cup the dog can lick it out- but if you have a very greedy dog, be careful because he might gobble down the paper too.
