Internal tasks begin in childhood when our personalities are formed. For most people, internal training in childhood is woefully inadequate, so we move into adolescence internally hungry, hormonally driven, lost, angry and confused, but still trying to pretend that we "know it all...Without the foundation of having completed our childhood developmental tasks, in adolescence our responsibilities start to pile-up as we need to define our characters, choose a career, relate to the opposite sex, and deal with internal needs.As adults, we need to learn how to create intimacy and build emotional bonds in long-term romantic relationships, as well as feed our children's needs for emotional safety, self-worth, and self-awareness. Of course, if we have not mastered these basic internal tasks for ourselves, it is impossible to help our children...Completing our developmental tasks in a layered and life-stage appropriate manner allows us to grow-up with self-worth and peace of mind, in addition to create the self, life, and other-awareness necessary for our own fulfillment, build emotional bonds, and contribute to the internal evolution of our species. About the Author
Dr. Hatherley has a Ph.D. in psychology. He has studied Western literature, history, religion and philosophy. He has also explored Eastern thought as represented by Chinese Taoism, Indian Buddhism, and Japanese Zen.
For over twenty years, Dr. Hatherley practiced psychotherapy, and for the past ten years has offered education in mental & emotional development.
Throughout his career, Dr. Hatherley has explored one key question, “What, if anything, will make human life internally satisfying and meaningful.
Dr. Hatherley currently resides in La Mesa, CA where he offers workshops, classes, and individual consultations in how to become internally fulfilled & genuinely happy.
