To Mum, Gifts from Your Soul

Our mother’s dementia was gradually growing, and time was of the essence with her upcoming ninetieth birthday. I wanted to give her something of true meaning to show my deep appreciation for all the years she had cared for me. For months, I rushed through stores, scanned the internet, and asked friends to help me find that perfect gift. Yet, every bright idea seemed insignificant and unworthy. Sitting in a park one afternoon, exhausted from racking my brain for that perfect colourful gift, I found myself gazing across a field of bright yellow dandelions for inspiration. A memory of my mother teaching me how to make dandelion chains when I was a child washed through my mind. A warm smile crossed my face, and the outside world gradually began to fade. Kicking off my shoes and jacket, I sat down amongst the flowers and began making dandelion chains. For what seemed like hours, I adorned myself with layers of bright yellow dandelion necklaces, bracelets and a glorious crown. I felt like a little girl again, playing with my mother. I didn’t care what anyone thought or who walked by. I was happy, full of joy, and giggling. I was in another time space. My intention was to give a heartfelt gift to my mother; it also turned out to be one of the greatest gifts I gave to myself. And it all started back in a field of dandelions.
