For young people and mature adults meaning and purpose is, to a large degree, derived from accumulating, succeeding, building and protecting assets and families. This is entirely appropriate—it is the outward expression of human being.
As we enter our senior years however, the forms and structures that captured our interests as young people and mature adults begin to fade. Many of the questions of our lives are asked and answered. So what happens to all this looking forward energy in the later years as we grow into our 70’s , 80’s, 90’s and even older?
The preoccupations of the outward expression that consumed so much of our attention dissipates with age and as we age, our senior years offer us an opportunity to shift our attention inwardly, and to ask the more essential questions in life and, in so doing, open ourselves to the great potential of true wisdom. What legacy can I leave the world? How will I be remembered? What have I learned and how can I share that in a way that makes a difference?
Notice how much our elders want to share? This is more than a need derived from loneliness. This is a spiritual imperative.
