Where am “I” in this picture? The body picks up the stimulus and makes a phone call to the brain which, based on experience, maybe some rules of thumb and a library of data (something I read on the internet or overheard in the Starbucks line-up), decides on a response to the stimulus. What feels true is that I am somehow observing all of this, but only when I am present to the scene unfolding. Like I am in the balcony watching the scene on the stage and, guess what, I am always one of the main characters in the play that I am watching. Also, I get to slow time down and direct/ inform the “me” that is on that stage. The other very important possibility is that the brain may have turned the phone off. Oh, oh. An even more amazing thing is that I can leave my seat in the balcony, go out to the washroom or the concessions or outside and, amazing thing of amazing things, the play keeps on going without any direction from me. Well, not from the me that is objective and seeing the entire stage and who has a copy of the programme with the storyline somewhat explained. Direction, in this case, is coming from the “me” that is on the stage, can’t see the overall picture, so makes up the data that is missing from that lower plane of view. The “thinker” in this case is mostly the ego, an emotionally immature five-year-old who is afraid of, well, everything. Hmmm?
The disease, GBS, takes the body out of the equation so the mind can put all of its power toward sensing beyond simple conscious living. From there, amazing insights become available. Understanding goes way up. Clarity goes way up. Life gets way better. Happiness becomes more normal.
