EXAMPLE: One day, the second graders asked about my favorite color. I said that I preferred orange, whereas my husband liked red. So I had an orange V.W. and he had a red V.W. I looked upon a sea of blank faces. "What's a V.W.?" they wanted to know.
"Oh, it's a Bug!" I explained, thinking that everyone had seen the Walt Disney movie, "Herbie, the Love Bug." Silence again.
"What's a Bug?" they chorused.
"A VeeDub." Nothing
"A Volkswagen!" Nada. Zip. Zilch.
Not until I took them outside and showed them, did they get the picture. The word car would have
sufficed.
