I believe in the power of authentic storytelling. Some of the most profound lessons I have had in my lifetime have come from stories. The stories that I find most powerful are those that honestly, boldly, and accurately relay life experiences. This book is a book of such stories.
My intention is to accomplish three basic goals:
(1) Give the reader a basic understanding of the body’s miraculous fascial system and the power of authentic Myofascial Release (MFR), as taught by John F. Barnes, PT
(2) Share the varied experiences of multiple individuals, so readers are likely to resonate or “connect with” at least one or two shared experiences
(3) Give readers hope that whatever challenging issues they are experiencing might potentially be transformed by accessing and treating their fascial system
This book is not an academic or clinical book. It is written with the public as the target audience. It is meant to be a first step, an introduction, an awareness raiser. It is meant to be read and then shared with people. Many readers might be motivated into action and seek out a John Barnes trained MFR practitioner to begin exploring what’s in their own fascial web.
The book is split into two sections. Section One is autobiographical. I share key components of my journey from chronic pain and depression, to my current state of pain-limited living and happiness. I say pain-limited living because it would be inauthentic to say that I am completely pain free. But, I think most would agree that going from chronic, daily, eight out of ten (8/10) pain to infrequent two out of ten (2/10) pain is a quantum leap! The beginning of each chapter in this first section, except Chapter 1, starts with basic information about fascia and MFR. Each of the chapters in Section One ends with a written contribution from one of my clients. Each client’s story is written in their own words with little, if any, editing. Some of my clients have chosen to use their real names, while others have chosen to use an alias or no name at all.
Section Two of the book is comprised of fifteen “What’s in Your Web?” experiences shared by varied amazing John Barnes trained MFR therapists. Most chapters in this section end with one or two of their clients’ “What’s in Your Web?” stories. As with my clients’ contributions, these stories were written by the clients themselves, and very little, if any, editing has been made to their stories.
The term “Myofascial Release” (or MFR) is used differently by different practitioners around the world; this can be a great source of confusion to the public. When I speak about MFR throughout this entire book, I am speaking very specifically of MFR as taught by John F. Barnes, PT. Many therapy schools and continuing education courses teach what they label as MFR, but it is quite different in many ways than John F. Barnes’ specific method.
I am extremely excited that this book has found its way into your life. Since you are reading this right now, the time is likely right for you to embark on a journey. Your journey, like you, and like your fascial web, is completely unique. It is one of a kind. There is no one else on this planet that has the same exact journey as you. Maybe one day I will be fortunate enough to hear your “What’s in Your Web?” story!
