He answers the door with a spoon in hand And states that tonight’s meal will be fish Demurely I express “I hope you’ll understand.” “I get an allergic reaction to that dish.” Scowling he mutters he can prepare spaghetti And I tell him that pasta will be just fine As he cuts mushrooms with the kitchen machete He asks if I can open the bottle of wine The change in meal calls for a bottle of red The bottle I pick was standing upright So the corkscrew crumbles the dry cork like old bread And cork floating in wine is not a pretty sight With the partly open cork stuck in the bottle I try to shake wine into the glasses The tablecloth takes on a colorful mottle Certainly not the method used by the masses Glancing in he wonders what is taking so long He sees me trying to mop up the stain As I attempt to explain how this all went wrong I can see that his patience is starting to wane.

This is Cynthia’s first book publishing endeavor but she has been published for poetry going back to high school and recently for articles in an association magazine. Now partially retired and living in Illinois, she relaxes creating the poetry of rhyme.
