The view from Maria Taferl, especially during spring, was breathtaking. Looking from above at the peaceful blue Danube, the passing cargo or tourist ships was quite fulfilling. The smell from the nearby bakery was so satisfying every time we would pass it. I would look through the bakery’s window and see the fresh bread in the baskets and beautiful cakes and donuts. I only wished to try them especially when I felt hungry. There was only one time when I went inside to satisfy my craving and bought myself a donut. I had no money for more. The donut was priceless, so sweet and delicious. The napkin wrapped around this little donut was one I kept for many years, just to remember.

About the Book
It is a story of a young soul who experienced the beginning of Bosnian War occurring in her village, her struggles with cultural identity, and the devastation of the war that brought upon innocent people. The story explains her escape from Bosnia while becoming a refugee who ended up in Austria and later on to Canada as a new immigrant. The story is full of self-reflection that had an impact on the author’s life shaping, and she hope that the book will open a new horizon to the reader.
