A Child’s Picture Looking back with a child’s portrait I stalked the sunlight between Fracturing gaps of blowing leaves I hope for my mother to end her lamenting For the heavy-handed machine blows To decline, from scaring her features I desire her stare to be vivid And for her smile to crawl From under domestic hardship I watched her bent back Washing clothes on a scrubbing board As the timber struck her head With warm water her tiny offspring’s Clean the earth and small pebbles From her gushing gash They held her head And forehead together In wrapped gauze As she slept They cleared the blood splats From a stained floor In bleach the blood is still fresh And pours red Onto the plum tree

About the Book
C hanging Light is a collection of poems that explores the multidimensional nature of the world by shedding light on nature, social issues, and everyday encounters of life. This collection talks about politics and various forms of violence and its impact on families and society. The poems provide a voice for the most vulnerable in society. The poems allow the reader to encounter pain, injustice, loss, and also the beautiful snapshots of nature. This collection offers a viewpoint that allows the reader to examine all aspects of life.
About the Author
The author has 16 years experience working with at-risk youth and high-risk communities in her home country, Trinidad and Tobago. She enrolled in a Bachelor of Communication and Media Studies at the University of Notre Dame, Australia. She has participated in Cropper Foundation Residential Workshop for Caribbean writers in 2010. Wasafiri Magazine later published three of her poems in the June 2013 issue. She has also performed at various open mikes and poetry readings in her home country. She has the ability to be both a literary and visual artist with her unique perspective not only through the use of light on various topics but with her in-depth social experiences.
