About the Book

In her simple, unpretentious style, Virginia tells her story of a lifetime marked by sexual abuse and trauma and the resulting drug and alcohol abuse and self-hatred. It’s not an easy read, but it’s not meant to be. It goes deep into the dark recesses of a troubled mind, revealing the daily struggle of trying to be a successful wife and mother while being sucked into a whirlpool of depression, guilt, shame, and self-destruction. But it also shows us that hope is a tiny seed that can survive in the deepest darkness, and if gently tended with faith and love, can grow into a fierce power. It’s an important story to tell, because it reflects the lives of millions of women who experienced the same traumas. They still hold the unspoken truth deep in their hearts and dare not hope for a better life. With the publishing of this book, Virginia hopes to inspire these women to look deep inside and find that hope, tend that seed, and find their healing.

About the Author

Virginia Oakley is a retired technical writer who dabbles in sculpting, drawing, painting, and fabric arts. For many years, the sexual abuse and traumas she suffered in life caused depression, bitterness, and withdrawal. She lived as small as she could, an imposter in her own life, afraid to reveal her true self and what she had suffered for fear of rejection by all who knew her. These choices took a devastating toll on her health and well-being. Her relationships suffered, and her connection to life weakened. Finally at the age of 60, she realized that instead of destroying her life, the traumas were actually a dark gift. Rather than giving her a multitude of reasons to hide and quietly fade away, the dark gift challenged her to rise up and seize life, its dangers and its beauty. By finally telling her story, she has set the record straight and revealed her true self, long hidden.
