Bible Dreams Teach Us

Can you imagine dreaming of wrestling with a monster? It could get very frightening. Talk of nightmares! Jacob got angry with the monster and demanded a gift. Suppose that in your waking life, you are wrestling with a problem that seems to have the best of you, you are at your wits end. In your dreams you get this monster beating you to the ground also. That seems like enough to drive anyone into depression, being forced to accept what you seemingly can’t fight. There is a theory that we should turn towards the villain in our nightmares and ask what he wants from us. Instead, know that the monster of your dreams is a part of you, the part of yourself searching for a different outcome. Call it the spark of God inside us all. It wants you to get angry and end the whole thing. Does it mean for you to do something rash? No. It most likely wants to change your view about the path you are on. A change of attitude can make all the difference. Go back into that dream and face the monster and ask, what do you want of me? The real answer will change your outlook, give you a set of answers much better than what you are living. As some wise people say, it is not what they do to me that matters, but rather, how I react to what they do to me. I have used this dream a few times to illustrate another’s dream. To me, Jacob reached the end of his patience, was not about to be taken advantage of and shoved around. Occasionally, I’ve run into people who have had a similar dream. I ask them to look to where in their life they need to finally take charge. Each time, the dreamer then knew exactly what the dream was about and they took steps to right any wrongs in their life. God, in their dreams, gave them the strength they didn’t have before. From Jacob’s dreams I got the idea of honoring each dream, whether I understood it or not. It’s like saying, “I’m listening and ready to do whatever you ask.” I instinctively knew God would only ask me to do what is right for this world, what is good. The angels ascending and descending the ladders bring the messages we receive in our dreams. What have we missed? It is never too late. As the old saying goes, ‘It's better late than never.’
