When he grew old enough to enter the training program, Misha’s skill outshone all the other reindeer. Maya had overheard Santa talking to Mrs. Claus. “You should watch that orphan reindeer at practice, Mrs. C!”
“You mean the one that Maya is so fond of?” asked Mrs. Claus.
“Yes! He is very sure-footed for his age and has a natural ability to work with a team. He is a born leader!”
Mrs. Claus nodded in agreement. “For such a young buck, he seems to be quite certain about his life purpose,” she said.
Who would replace Donner? The day of the big announcement finally arrived.
“Good luck, Misha!” wished Maya. Now she had to stand on her tiptoes to give her beloved pet a hug. She felt the eagerness in his trembling body.
All of the reindeer that had tried out gathered around Santa. Their eyes roamed from one to another, wondering who would get the job.

About the Author
Dian Shirley began collecting children’s books for her classroom, later realizing that they were actually for her own enjoyment. Children’s books, she discovered, have messages for kids of any age. As a teacher, she often uses these books to develop concepts in all areas of the curriculum.
Since retiring from a career in teaching, like Misha she continues to follow her heart by engaging in her love of writing. As a life-long learner, Dian takes writing classes and writes personal essays, memoir and poetry. Her grandchildren inspire many of her stories.
Passionate about body mind spirit integration, Dian is certified by The Chopra Center to teach Primordial Sound Meditation, Yoga and Ayurveda to both children and adults. Dian loves to be outdoors in the natural world. She can often be found walking along the river near her home in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with her two rescue dogs, Jake and Cassie.
