Julio and I walk to the end of Avila Beach
where the swallows have built mud nests
on the rock face
Into the waves
I cry out the things
I am grateful for
A wave rolls a cold can of beer
to Julio’s feet
He yells
Look at this
Picks it up
opens it
takes a swig
I laugh
yell back
Julio
this feels really good
to shout to the waves
all I’m thankful for
Try it
He faces the waves
cries out
Poseidon
bring me more beer
Three days later
he says to me
You'll never guess
what I found
in the trash—
a sixpack of beer
