This book was written as an effort to preserve history so that people of all backgrounds can more deeply understand, reflect upon, and heal from the legacies of slavery and racial hierarchy—transforming awareness of the past into insight, accountability, and strength for the future. While African Americans have borne the greatest and most enduring harms of these systems, the history of slavery and racism has shaped the moral, social, and psychological development of everyone living within those societies.
