Meeting the tall man—whose name she didn’t even know—was about to unexpectedly end her orderly life. Just a week later, Isabel saw him again at the club. She spotted him immediately on the dance floor, his height making him stand out. He recognized her too and waved her over. This time, she took a closer look: dyed black hair, striking green eyes set deep within his face, giving him an air of mystery. His smile was heartfelt and lit up his unique features as she approached. As he reached through the crowd to pull her closer, she noticed his gigantic hands enveloping hers completely. For no obvious reason, excitement rushed through her body. She was glad for a second chance to get to know him better. They spent the entire evening in each other’s orbit, and eventually, curiosity, intriguing conversations, and the courage of a tipsy woman led her to accept his repeated invitations to have another drink at his place. It wasn’t her style to go home with strangers, nor did she intend to cheat on Jules. “Stupid decisions make good stories,” she thought as she overruled her hesitation. He closed the door behind her and turned the key in the lock. She could—or should—have become suspicious. But she didn’t. Every house had its own smell, and this one smelled strangely familiar. “Nathan,” he said, smiling at her. “Isabel,” she replied, spontaneously taking a deep, affirming breath as she stood in his apartment for the first time. Then she followed him into the cozy living room. “Who are you, Isabel?” he asked later, placing a glass of champagne in her hand. She looked into his inviting green eyes, unsure of the answer. She had never really considered that question before and spent the entire night searching for answers that felt unsatisfying. Looking back, his question introduced a subtle crack in her sense of identity. They talked about their lives. She felt at ease with him; he made her laugh and opened new doors in her perception. Time seemed to loosen its grip as he kept asking about her life, questions that stirred memories and thoughts she hadn’t touched in a long time. She noticed how easily they spoke, as if words were rising on their own, bypassing usual filters. Isabel felt a subtle inner shift, as though something unseen had been set in motion. A vague awareness hovered at the edges of her mind: that this evening mattered, though she could not yet say why. At some point, Nathan slipped into the kitchen to open another bottle of champagne. Left alone for a moment, she became aware of herself sitting there—slightly lighter, slightly unguarded—already changed in a way that felt irreversible. When Nathan returned and refilled her glass, she accepted without hesitation. She knew she would leave later than intended and a little more tipsy than she had arrived, but she couldn’t resist the magnetism of the moment. The next morning, she woke up in her own bed next to Jules. Sunlight filled the room; they must have slept through the stable noises below. Jules lay beside her, his familiar silhouette still asleep. His clothes were neatly stacked on the dresser. Flowers in need of fresh water stood on the windowsill. A plate with leftover food from his dinner sat on the table. It all felt like a still life. Something had shifted. Not because she was hungover—this was different. Suddenly, a moment of awakening hit her with startling clarity. This was no longer her life. This was no longer her relationship. Expired. She looked out the window at the courtyard below: grazing horses, a friend preparing for a beach ride, dogs rolling in the sand. It was as if she had stepped out of her own movie. Everything felt foreign. Meeting Nathan wasn’t the cause, she realized. He had merely revealed what had already been true. Quietly, she got dressed.
