The dark imagery was familiar to me. A college major in English had served me well: Edgar Allan Poe and Flannery O’Connor and Kate Chopin all fresh in my psyche. Everything I wrote in those days was Romeo and Juliet or The Sun Also Rises in its intent--exploring suffering, capturing loss, illustrating unfulfilled desire with imagery of checkpoints, razor wire, and border guards or whatever was familiar to me at the time. Those straight A’s weren’t for nothing, you know. As I can’t recall ever having read a piece of assigned literature that told a happy ending to a happy story, how could I ever be expected to write one?
