What is a Healing Practice?
A healing practice, among other things, is a way of thinking, acting, or behaving that facilitates a shift in energy, helps us grow and develop as human beings, and connects us with our divine essence. In our lives, we all experience things that shape us in one way or another and that give us, not only our sense of who we are for ourselves, but who we are for the world and who the world is for us. In essence a human being’s reality is shaped by his or her experiences; those experiences imprint us with our energetic signatures, and it behooves us to make ourselves aware of those imprints - their origins and effects – if we are to have access to our true selves.
His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso is quoted as saying – “How you do anything is how you do everything”. This means how you think, feel, and act in one area of your life affects every other area of your life. This is important to remember. Often people believe their attitudes and behaviors in one aspect of their lives won’t affect any other aspect, save that one. This couldn’t be any farther from the truth! Everything you think, feel, and do affects every part of your life, and taking on just one of the healing practices contained in this book can positively impact your entire life, if you are open to it. But, you must be consistent. Your personal power is a function of your intention. If your intention is to live a powerful and enlightened life, that is exactly what you will do.
It’s also important that you understand that personal power is a multifaceted, multilevel phenomenon. In other words, you have more than one “power center”, and they all play a role in how you feel, think, and act in any given circumstance and how you feel about yourself and your life, in general. They are: 1) Your emotions; 2) Your intellect; 3) Your spirit; 4) Your physical senses; and, 5) Your intuitive abilities. Although you may tend towards leading with one more than another, your power centers are interdependent, and your failure to empower any of them can inhibit your experience of divine connection and spiritual guidance.
Each of the healing practices in this book brings healing to one or more of your power centers, and I invite you to notice which of your power centers is activated with each practice. For example, you may find yourself being more thoughtful or intuitive, more emotionally aware or physically active, depending on which of your power centers is being stimulated. I also invite you to notice when you have a particular resonance with or resistance to any of the practices. “Resonance” means positivity – a feeling of affirmation. When you find a particular practice that resonates with you, celebrate it, dive into it, and expand it. Practice it with devotion and allow the full experience of it to permeate your entire life. When you feel yourself “resisting” or shying away from a practice, take note. Resistance is a sign that one or more emotions have been reactivated by something in the present that reminds you of an unpleasant experience you’ve had in the past. This reaction is human, but you must remain open to new experiences if you really want to live a powerful life. This book offers you plenty of opportunities to identify the things that activate you. Take this time to learn about yourself, and be open to change. That is how you will bring the energy of healing into your life. That is how you will learn to connect with and expand your personal power network.
How you think (Intellectual Power) and feel (Emotional Power) has a bearing on how connected you feel spiritually and intuitively. How you use and take care of your physical body (Sensation) plays a role in this, as well. Your body is the vessel in which you carry all of your sensations, emotions, memories, and dreams. You can use the healing practices in this book to become more in tune with your physical body and to bring all of your power centers on line. But first and foremost, you must be kind to yourself. True healing is a process that isn’t always easy. It takes time and intention and often requires us to look inside ourselves in a way that we would rather not. When you feel resistance of any kind – discomfort, fear, anxiety, procrastination, or avoidance – you can be sure that you are entering the land of healing. Do your best to be faithful and take on the practices that appeal to you, no matter how uncomfortable it may be to do so, for it is in the discomfort that true healing takes place. Ultimately it’s how you relate to your own healing that’s going to make a difference. It’s more the being than the doing that’s going to give you the experience of joy, freedom, abundance, and fulfillment that you are looking for.
