While the secrets of the physical world have been unraveled by physics, the inner world of human psyche has been probed by various schools of psychology.
Psychology is defined as the study of psyche - the spirit. The English
word ‘spirit’ comes from the Latin ‘spiritus’ meaning breath.
In scriptures, particularly the Quran, God informs us that ‘He
breathed in man from His own Spirit.’ Thus, any study of the
nature of psyche of man without referring to the Spirit of God will
be incomplete and inaccurate.
A wealth of knowledge about esoteric experiences has
accumulated in the fields of psychology, parapsychology, mysticism,
spirituality and religion. Spirituality involves a longing for God, the
source of the human spirit.
Divine attributes are the tasks that God performs. Physics teaches us
that, for performing a task, a corresponding type of energy is needed.
Thus we understand that God possesses an infinite ocean of divine
energies which are referred to as the spirit of God.
God endowed each person with a ‘droplet’ of divine energies; this constitutes the core of
human personality and is termed the ‘divine spark’. Human traits
such as compassion, fairness, creativity, appreciation of beauty emanate from this divine source.
True religion is the methodology of developing the bond with God
by inculcating feelings of awe and reverence that foster this longing.
Thus the study of psychology is intertwined with that of religion and
spirituality.
The major questions of interest to philosophy such as the meaning
and purpose of life, mind-body problem, nature of consciousness
and issues of ethics are directly related to the origin and nature of
human self. This book presents a new scientific theory of the human
self that helps in answering the above questions.
Unlike most of the existing theories of the personality that are based
on conjecture, the postulates of the present theory of human self are
derived from the following two sources:
Experiential knowledge of psychological and paranormal
Phenomena & Revealed scriptures, particularly the Quran.

About the Book
Unlike most theories of the human self that are generally based on conjecture, this book describes a new scientific theory of the human self and its states of consciousness. This theory is formulated using the revealed knowledge found in the Holy Scriptures along with the principles of physics. In a quest for the ultimate truth, the book attempts to understand the relationship between man and his Creator. Dr. Naqvi describes the universal principle of complementarity of creation that shows that the world of matter is not mutually exclusive to the spirit world, but both are complementary to each other. The three major holy scriptures of monotheistic faith describe the human spirit as a breath from the spirit of God. It is termed divine spark in man. The book explains that the divine spark is a seed of divine attributes of truth, goodness, compassion, and justice. A major outcome of this notion is that all humans are equal members of the family of God, irrespective of race, color, or creed and deserving mutual respect and compassion. Questions are answered about the origin of human spirit, purpose of human creation, spirit-matter interaction, and the basis of ethics. Findings of prominent neurosurgeons show that the spirit (soul) is an autonomous entity that can exist without a physical vehicle, which takes the inquisitive reader into a mind-blowing conclusion. This book is a response to the growing need among academics and thinking masses for scientific explanations of spirituality, psychology, philosophy, mysticism, religion, and paranormal phenomena. Over the past twenty-five years, the author has presented the theory in various universities in psychology and theology departments globally. This book may serve as course material for university-level psychology, philosophy, and theology departments. In brief, the unique theory presented in this book can be described as the science of spirituality.
About the Author
Dr. Athar Naqvi (b. 1944) obtained his Ph.D. degree in 1969 from Imperial College, London (UK) in Laser, Holography and Plasma Physics. As an experimental Laser Physicist, he has been involved in the study of the structure and dynamics of atoms, molecules, crystals and gaseous plasmas. These studies provide keen understanding of the laws governing the behavior of matter systems. Dr. Naqvi has also taught courses on philosophy of science explaining the methodology of formulation of scientific theories. Dr. Naqvi has a deep passion for understanding the spiritual aspect of man. He believes that man’s central role on earth is to be a vicar of God; for establishing the kingdom of God on earth. Thus, not restricting himself to the study of material systems, he has dedicated years to the interdisciplinary study of the “inner world” of religion, mysticism and parapsychological phenomena. Over the years, Dr. Naqvi has presented the ‘New Scientific Islamic Theory of the Human Self’ at various universities and professional forums in USA, Malaysia, UK, Canada, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. In addition to the courses on philosophy of science and scientific method, he also conducted courses on scriptures including Quran and the Bible, mysticism and parapsychology. Dr. Naqvi taught at King Saud University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia where he conducted scientific research in laser spectroscopy of atoms, molecules and crystals. He later became involved in industrial research on lasers and opto-electronics. The journey of diversification took him to the consultancy and training in the field of ISO-based management systems on Quality, Environment, Food Safety and Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) studies in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
