The purpose of this uniquely inspired book is to bring comfort and encouragement to children after the death of a parent or anyone else they love. The story is intended to be read by an adult to a child as an interactive tool to facilitate a conversation about death and allow the child to openly share his or her feelings and begin the process of healing their grief.
My Mommy Is a Butterfly introduces the concept that love never dies – that feelings of love survive the death of the physical body and keep us connected forever. This concept gives children hope by teaching them that if they focus on their feelings of love and trust that the person who died still loves them, they will receive “signs from Heaven” that will validate their connection.
These signs are known as after-death communications, or ADCs, and an estimated 60-120 million Americans, including children, experience them. It’s actually very common for children to receive signs from the spiritual realm because their hearts and minds are naturally open. These communications may include dreams, visions, auditory messages, or simply sensing a presence.
In 2003, at a very pivotal point in my life, I received my first ADC from my mother more than 17 years after her death. While it gave me goose bumps at the time, I wasn’t sure if what I had experienced was real. That encounter led me to investigate after-death communications. My research inspired me to trust that my mom was still watching over me and sending me her love.
In 2008, I was blessed to receive a reading from a famous medium who brought my mom through and told me things only my mom would have known. At the end of the reading, she told me that my mom often appears to me as a butterfly. That reading validated my mom’s existence in the afterlife, encouraged me to be open to signs, and inspired me to write this heartfelt story.
It’s my hope that this story empowers children with resiliency and inspires them to see death not only as an ending but also as a new beginning of a different type of relationship – one that shows them that love never dies.
