The Indigo Soul

I kept reminding myself this was not a medical diagnosis but rather a spiritual diagnosis. I didn’t care. Everything I’ve learned up to this point has brought me to this place. I devoured anything and everything I could get my hands on regarding Indigo Children. Some books were too clinical. Some books were just too far “out there”. The best resource at the time (for me anyway) is “The Care and Feeding of Indigo Children” by Doreen Virtue (Hay House Publishing, 2001).

The product description for the book is as follows: Indigo Children are bright, intuitive, strong-willed, and sometimes self-destructive individuals. They are often labeled (and misdiagnosed) as having ADD or ADHD because they won’t comply with established rules and patterns; and they may exhibit behavioral problems at home and at school ...

I was mesmerized. This made sense. I read that book in the parking lot of the store. Finally, I had an understanding of what I’ve been dealing with (and no I’m not crazy). There are many opinions out there regarding the definition and validity of Indigo. We may or may not agree on all points. Based on my personal experiences, I cannot fit a round peg (my kids) into a square hole (traditional education). I refuse to say square peg in a round hole because my kids are not “square”.

I am not here to confirm, nor deny, (or even excuse) the classification of Indigo. I find it ironic that public education will readily support numerous programs funded by tax payer dollars for “gifted” children. I could argue that my children are “gifted” as well, just not in the one dimensional way we currently use to identify who is, or is not, gifted. He is really intelligent. That was never disputed. The ability to “apply one’s self” and be “accessed via the recognized methods” unfortunately don’t coincide with the way he performs. Let me be very clear; it is a “choice”, his choice, on whether he chooses to perform. He may acknowledge what you ask, though it doesn’t guarantee he will execute what you’re asking. He’s more interested in why you are asking it? How are you asking it? Since he has no quantifiable “learning disability” (i.e. though common characteristics of Indigo he is not ADD or ADHD), I at least now have some semblance of an explanation; and I believe it to be true.
