About the Book

This book is an educational resource for parents, teachers and adults to read to young children about trans and gender diverse people. It is a story about Lucy Star at age 7 who just wants to be who she really is - a girl. Lucy was born with a body that looked like a boy but she knows she is a girl. She always said “Mummy I don’t feel like a boy”. Lucy starts primary school as a boy but in grade 2 Lucy insists on wearing a dress and being called Lucy. Her parents are supportive of her and they talk to the school. The next day Lucy wears a dress. Lucy is bullied by some of the children. Lucy just wants them to understand her. Patsy and Bill, Lucy’s parents, move Lucy into a new school where she blossoms. She meets news friends namely Maisie and Marcel and finally Lucy is able to be who she really is.

About the Author

Kate Downey is originally from Melbourne but now lives in Geelong. This is her first book.

Kate is passionate about social inclusion, equal rights, feminism and ideas that influence our community to listen to each other, share our stories and be genuinely interested in others.

Kate says children simplify how it is for them. They know who they are. They are very clear. It is the adults who complicate things.

Trans and gender diverse people are important role models for us to admire namely for their journey and their right to be who they really are.
